Fred Perry clothing and polo shirts
by admin on Aug.25, 2010, under Business, General
Fred Perry was a champion on the tennis courts and famous for his dapper style. When Perry was asked to start designing sportswear–namely sweatbands that were later followed by what would become his iconic polo–it is doubtful anyone could have foreseen the brand’s staying power. After Fred Perry clothing rocketed in popularity during the 1960s and 1970s–mainly among skinheads in Doc Martins and the “Perry Boys” from Manchester who loved David Bowie and their Fred Perry polos to be multicoloured–the brand is now back in a big way, if it ever really left.
Fred Perry Polo Shirts are adorned with an embroidered laurel leaf that was based on the old Wimbledon symbol. At the time this differentiated Fred Perry clothing from rival Lacoste, whose little alligator was merely ironed on. Perry’s narrowly cut cotton piqué shirt is still made the same way as it was in the 60s, 70s and 80s when it was so influential in style movements like punk, and is still manufactured in England. The Fred Perry line also offers stylish trainers that were first introduced in 1957 when their style made it seem as if they had been transported directly from Wimbledon to the urban streets. At the time, Perry aficionados loved the brand for their wrinkle-free polos and soon had a new uniform when they added slim pants and the rubber soled trainers.

As classic as the Fred Perry look is the brand has always managed to remain cutting edge and anti-establishment, influencing youth and music culture like few other brands. Even today Fred Perry clothing keeps its close ties with its subversive roots, working to bring exposure to little known musical acts through its Subculture music initiative. Launched in September 2005 by Paul Weller at The 100 Club, Subculture continues to thrive. It seems clear that Fred Perry clothing’s influence and cultural dominance still remains strong and the laurel leaf polos will continue to get handed down from generation to generation, just like appreciation for good music and a little rebellion.
Vivienne Westwood Accessories & Bags

What words come to mind when you think of Vivienne Westwood clothing? Innovative, cutting edge, punk, romantic, tough, corset, tartan…these are just some that are associated with the iconic British designer who is credited with putting her own touch on new wave and punk style to give them mass appeal. Since storming onto the scene in 1971, when her designs first went on sale in the King’s Road store of her partner Malcom McLaren (he is the recently deceased manager of the Sex Pistols), Westwood has pushed the envelope and made a name for herself producing unique and perfectly tailored pieces. This aesthetic, as well as her trademark orb crest, has also made its way into a line of Vivienne Westwood bags.
Vivienne Westwood has survived four decades in the thankless fashion business mainly because the designer is a little bit rebellious, a tiny bit eccentric and a lot talented. This two-time British designer of the year was also made a Dame by the Queen in 2006 and has had her work displayed in the venerable Victoria and Albert Museum. It’s ironic that a designer who made her name on shock and attitude has now been so thoroughly embraced by the establishment, who are now completely enamored with Westwood’s platforms, corsets, orbs and tartans.
The designer’s tartans can be seen throughout the line of Vivienne Westwood bags. The tartans come in many different colours that compliment a wide variety of tastes and outfits. A clear reference to Westwood’s Anglomania, the fabric, which is also used in the designer’s clothing and Vivienne Westwood accessories like wallets, is a perfect reflection of the designer’s sensibilities.
Westwood’s line of bags and related accessories also includes leather items, some embossed with the designer’s name and carrying her orb symbol, as well as patent leather in various bright hues as vibrant as Westwood herself. The bags also come in several different styles from totes and wallets to pouches and crossbody clutch bags.
Vivienne Westwood bags also offer painted and printed versions that are a perfect mix of the designer’s past and present. The graffiti-style print harkens back to Westwood’s punk roots while the traditonal styles, like the classic doctor’s bag shape, mean that these bags will surely stand the test of time. Westwood bags are the perfect finishing touch to a chic outfit (how about pairing one with skinny jeans and great boots?) and are quite a fashion statement in and of themselves.
A Vivienne Westwood bag or wallet is the perfect way to bring a piece of the designer’s cutting edge, iconic and decidedly British style to any outfit. Whether it be a bit of tartan, a golden orb or a painted doctor’s bag, Westwood’s line offers something for every woman and every outfit.
