Manual Directory Submissions

by on Nov.05, 2009, under Link Building, Search Engine Marketing, SEO, Web Directories

Directory submissions are one of the best seo technique out there.

There are many benefits of directory submissions:

• Most directories attract considerable traffic. Surfers access specific categories of interest to them and open websites within the category. By default, the website submitted by you will get “click through traffic.”

• Spiders released by search engines will add your site to search engine indexes. And, links from directory pages are automatically indexed.

• Higher rankings on the search engine page for key words optimizing the website. Ensure that the anchor text linking the directory to your website has a phrase that identifies or states clearly the functions offered by your website. This will provide: higher click through ratings; better rankings in search engines; a greater number of links enabled by variations in key phrases.

• Increased number of links to your web page. Surfers will find links to your website, as being in a directory means receiving many back links. The more the number of links the higher a search engine ranking and the greater the number of viewers or users or clients.

• Enhanced credibility. Being a part of a quality directory means that you website has been through stringent vetting standards and reviews. Internet surfers are aware that only websites of high standards are listed in a directory. Websites listed in directories with credibility means these are the sites of choice and, they are guaranteed excellent content as well as services.

• A niche directory that is specific to your business will direct potential customers quickly and efficiently. The cost of submission can be quickly recovered.

• Provide simple links with a high PR category pages and few or minimal outgoing links. This ensures maximized popularity links to your site, boosting rankings.

Seogalaxy.com offer manual directory submission service at very affordable rates.

We All Need Links

by on May.07, 2009, under SEO

Anyone who has any knowledge or experience of SEO (search engine optimisation) will understand the significance of backlinks. The inbound links to a particular web page are crucial in identifying the topic of the linked page and the number and quality of these inbound links can provide a measure of the authority of the linked page.

So how do you establish links to a page and where can you go to get those links? Well the first place that may require some attention is the parent website. Start with the internal link structure. A site’s navigation system must be simple, logical and intuitive to site visitors. The internal links leading to a particular page should ideally used anchor text that clearly matches the topic of the linked page and that topic should be one of the primary keyterms that you want your page to rank for.

Once you have your internal links optimised you’ll want to turn your attention to external links. Having established a logical and user friendly internal link structure you will then need to turn your attention to the external links. You will notice that I talk about specific pages in a site and not just the site index page. Many smaller sites will attempt to have their primary site index page rank well for all of their target keyterms but medium-sized and larger sites will ideally identify specific landing pages for specific topics and keyphrases. This means building links to multiple, deeper pages in the site.

For example, a site selling Beauty Products may stock a variety of brands. The products from these brands may be categorised as for the convenience of online shoppers. It therefore makes sense to establish focussed landing pages for each of the brands in the online store. The categories should include terms that people use when they shop for beauty products such as ‘moisturisers’, ‘cleansers’ etc.

So exactly where can we go to build links to these deeper inner pages? I always start with directories. While some people shy away from directories there are actually many top quality online directories that allow multiple links leading to deeper pages. There are even some excellent niche directories for certain types of sites. These can be good for both SEO and for attracting traffic.

The next thing I will often do is start communicating with blogs who might provide me with a link or allow me to write a unique post to be provided for free. Many bloggers are only too happy to accept a free blog post if it is well written and they don’t mind if it contains a link or two.

Something else I do at this stage is profile the backlinks to the various competitors that I might have for a particular term. This is a very worthwhile but often time consuming activity. I have identified many useful link resources using this technique.

A crucial aspect of any linkbuilding project that I undertake is to try and ensure that there is content on the site that people will naturally want to link to. This has been enormously successful. Content that I have added to sites that has naturally attracted links has included detailed product history pages, how-to tutorial in both text and video formats, images and badges free to download, simple online calculators and converters, games and competitions.

I hope that these notes give you some food for thought as you embark upon your own linkbuilding campaign. Good luck.

Avoiding Top SEO Mistakes

by on May.07, 2009, under SEO

Following are the 9 Biggest SEO Mistakes which Web Designers & Web Developers should avoid.

Splash Page

I’ve seen this mistake many times where people put up just a big banner image and a link “Click here to enter” on their homepage. The worst case — the “enter” link is embedded in the Flash object, which makes it impossible for the spiders to follow the link.

This is fine if you don’t care about what a search engine knows about your site; otherwise, you’re making a BIG mistake. Your homepage is probably your website’s highest ranking page and gets crawled frequently by web spiders. Your internal pages will not appear in the search engine index without the proper linking structure to internal pages for the spider to follow.

Your homepage should include (at minimum) target keywords and links to important pages.

Non-spiderable Flash Menus

Many designers make this mistake by using Flash menus such as those fade-in and animated menus. They might look cool to you but they can’t be seen by the search engines; and thus the links in the Flash menu will not be followed.

Image and Flash Content

Web spiders are like a text-based browser, they can’t read the text embedded in the graphic image or Flash. Most designers make this mistake by embedding the important content (such as target keywords) in Flash and image.

Overuse of Ajax

A lot of developers are trying to impress their visitor by implementing massive Ajax features (particularly for navigation purposes), but did you know that it is a big SEO mistake? Because, ajax content is loaded dynamically, so it is not spiderable or indexable by search engines.

Another disadvantage of Ajax — since the address URL doesn’t reload, your visitor can not send the current page to their friends.

Versioning of Theme Design

For some reason, some designers love to version their theme design into sub level folders (i.e. domain.com/v2, v3, v4) and redirect to the new folder. Constantly changing the main root location may cause you to lose backlink counts and ranking.

You probably see this a lot where people use “Click here” or “Learn more” as the linking text. This is great if you want to be ranked high for “Click Here”. But, if you want to tell the search engine that your page is important for a topic, than use, that topic/keyword in your link anchor text. It’s much more descriptive (and relevant) to say “learn more about {keyword topic}”

Warning: Don’t use the EXACT same anchor text everywhere on your website. This can sometimes be seen as search engine spam too.

Common Title Tag Mistakes

Same or similar title text:

Every page on your site should have a unique tag with the target keywords in it. Many developers make the mistake of having the same or similar title tags throughout the entire site. That’s like telling the search engine that EVERY page on your site refers to the same topic and one isn’t any more unique than the other.

One good example of bad Title Tag use would be the default WordPress theme. In case you didn’t know, the title tag of the default WordPress theme isn’t that useful: Site Name > Blog Archive > Post Title. Why isn’t this search engine friendly? Because, every single blog post will have the same text “Site Name > Blog Archive >” at the beginning of the Title Tag. If you really want to include the site name in the title tag, it should be at the end: Post Title | Site Name.

Exceeding the 65 character limit:

Many bloggers write very long post titles. So what? In search engine result pages, your title tag is used as the link heading. You have about 65 characters (including spaces) to get your message across or risk it getting cutoff.

Keyword stuffing the title:

Another common mistake people tend to make is overfilling the title tag with keywords. Saying the same thing 3 times doesn’t make you more relevant. Keyword stuffing in the Title Tag is looked at as search engine spam (not good). But it might be smart to repeat the same word in different ways:

“Photo Tips & Photography Techniques for Great Pictures”

“Photo” and “Photography” are the same word repeated twice but in different ways because your audience might use either one when performing a search query.

Empty Image Alt Attribute

You should always describe your image in the alt attribute. The alt attribute is what describes your image to a blind web user. Guess what? Search engines can’t see images so your alt attribute is a factor in illustrating what your page is relevant for.

Hint: Properly describing your images can help your ranking in the image search results. For example, Google image search brings me hundreds of referrals everyday for the search terms “abstract” and “dj”.

Unfriendly URLs

Most blog or CMS platforms have a friendly URL feature built-in, however, not every blogger is taking advantage of this. Friendly URL’s are good for both your human audience and the search engines. The URL is also an important spot where your keywords should appear.

Example of Friendly URL: domain.com/page-title

Example of Dynamic URL: domain.com/?p=12356

These things are the pillars of Search Engine Optimization and so to your web site’s success path.

Does Squidoo Lens Creation Really Work?

by on May.05, 2009, under SEO

Nowadays, if you have been reading the SEO news, you will notice that the term social bookmarking is one very common technique you might have heard so many times in the internet marketing world. These are the proven strategies people are using to drive traffic to their websites. Squidoo Lens Creation is one more, which is massively used in SEO these days. Squidoo is a fairly new company built-in 2005, but it’s already created huge changes in the way people do SEO. Now, it has become one of the more common ways in SEO services.

What Exactly the Squidoo Lenses Do?

The Squidoo site is all about sharing knowledge. The first people on the site used it as FAQ’s or DIY guides for a variety of things. Meanwhile, it’s your chance to show how much you (or at least the people writing for you) know about your niche. With a professional-looking Squidoo lens (a ‘lens’ being an individual page on Squidoo), you could make you and your company look like experts or the authority for your niche.

Now, imagine if you could combine that kind of promotion with links that point to your site. Remember, Squidoo is now one of the most popular sites on the Internet. It’s a killer combo that will attract both customers and better search engine rankings – if you make your lenses well enough, that is. It all boils down to the quality of the lenses that you upload to the site.

Creating Effective Squidoo Lenses

There’s no ‘correct’ or ‘prescribed’ formula for Squidoo lens creation; most of the SEO guys out there developed their methods through trial and error. It’d be a lot quicker and more practical if you were to just get the services of an established professional SEO company to create each lens for you. Not only will you save yourself the trouble of going through that trial and error process, but you’ll also make sure that your lenses will get made right, right away.

Most online marketing companies have their own system and methods for creating lenses for Squidoo. Each one has a unique blend of optimized content and other SEO techniques in order to give maximum results. You may want to use trial packages for two or three different service providers if you don’t have one of your own yet.

Don’t Just Rely On Lenses

A common mistake of many online marketers is to get Squidoo lenses and nothing else. If you’re going to work with a professional SEO company, ask them about their packages that combine Squidoo lens creation with other SEO services. Keep in mind that SEO works best when you integrate several techniques together into a cohesive strategy instead of using them one at a time.

You could, for example, get services to promote your own Squidoo lenses, which in turn promote your site. This little trick magnifies the effect of using the lenses alone, making for results that become visible quicker. The SEO Company you’ll work with will probably suggest some of their article marketing or link building services in conjunction with the lenses.

In the end, Squidoo lenses can be effective if used properly and done the right way. You could jack up the output from your lenses by using them with other SEO techniques. The best idea for using lenses would be to get a reliable SEO company that could integrate all those for you.

SEO Secrets For E-commerce Websites

by on May.01, 2009, under SEO

As the industry is changing as rapidly as Google tweaks their algorithm, it is hard to decide what the most important factors are. The On-site and off-site are the two major factors in SEO which is necessary for every type of website. Normally, most of the webmasters starts with the on-site SEO, because your aim is to get your website recognize by Google. If they don’t, then how are you ever going to rank for a keyword?

The search engine spiders that crawl your E-commerce website will be looking at several different attributes on every page to determine where it needs to go and how relevant it is to specific searches done at Google search engine.

Another factor worth mentioning is a Keyword. What is a Keyword?

A keyword is basically an elaborate name for what people might search for when trying to find your E-commerce website. I am using a Bodhost.co.uk website as an example. People could search for “Web Hosting”, but they might also search for “Cheap Web Hosting”, “VPS Web Hosting” and “UK Web Hosting Service”. All of these would be keywords, or probably more properly could be said to be key phrases.

However, they are generally all referred to simply as keywords. Note that almost all On-site SEO has to do with is placing high-quality keywords throughout your E-commerce website content where search engine robots, spiders, or software might be able to decide what your website is about.

6 On-Site SEO Factors That Can Influence Your SERP Ranking:

* The Title of the Page
* The keywords used in the text on your website
* The keywords are used in H1 Tags
* Keywords used in your domain name
* Keywords used in the URL of a webpage
* Meta Keywords

3 Major Off-Site SEO Factors That Can Improve Your Search Engine Ranking:

Backlinks to Your E-commerce Website

This is without a doubt one of the keys to having your website listed in the search engines results page for specific keywords. Google likes to look at what others are saying about your website to determine what it is about. For example, if someone is a huge fan of a UK Web Hosting, and you provide that service, they may link to your website with “UK Web Hosting” as the text that people would click on to get to your website. This text is called anchor text and Google will see that link as a simple “vote” for your website to appear higher than others for that keyword. In short, these are commonly referred to as backlinks.

Quality of the Websites linking to your Website

Those linking to your website should also have some form of importance. For example, there are many websites with loads of outgoing links to many websites. Google does not want to give these websites as much weight in their “vote” in comparison to a link from Bodhost’s official website or something along those lines.

The Age of Your E-commerce Website

The reason I listed this as an off-site related issue, because it really doesn’t fit in either category. This is a simple issue that the search engines will evaluate. This is not to say that it is the most important factor, but many older websites will naturally rank higher than new websites that have more backlinks.

I am not sure why this occurs, but many would say that it does. As compare to Google, Yahoo definitely puts more weight on this.

Why Generic Domain Names Attract More Search Engine Traffic

by on Apr.30, 2009, under SEO

Today, it’s progressively harder to get your website noticed by your prospective customers. Unless your company has thousands of dollars to spend on advertising and search engine optimization.

Now, there is a most effective and long lasting Marketing Strategy is to invest in quality generic domain name, which help you to get noticed and attract millions of search engine visitors.

The choice of your Domain Name is the most important Marketing Strategy you’ll ever make to help you to rank higher on thousands of Search Engines and attract millions of visitors each year.

The truth is, websites with Generic Keywords in their domain name WILL list higher (in the first 20 listings on top Search Engines) than the most optimized websites and is easier to find on top Search Engines.

Before purchasing a domain name, there are many things to consider. In order to be seen by buyers when they are using a search engine to look for a product or service, it is essential that your website be one of the first 20 or so listed. One of the best ways to insure this is to use a GENERIC Domain Name for your website.

For Example:

Using a search engine is very similar to looking up a product or service in the Yellow Pages of your local phone book – under the generic name of the product/service you will find companies that have what you are looking for. Similarly, on the internet, some search engines list websites by how closely the website name compares to the item being searched for.

If your business name is ABC Corp. and you are in the business of selling ‘Baby Toys’ online. You’ll drive thousand times more targeted traffic if your Domain name includes your “Main Key Word” on it like:

TopBabyToys.com
JustBabyToys.com
CustomBabyToys.com
AmericanBabyToys.com
UltimateBabyToys.com or,
ABCKidsToys.com; Instead of your brand name ABCCORP.COM.

A good generic domain name can put you way ahead of your competition in the search engines, and, can literally be worth many millions of dollars.

In the past, some companies believed that company recognition was the key and were willing to pay a lot of money to obtain this. The internet, however, is changing the way that knowledgeable company executives are attracting buyers.

Unless you are willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising, it is much more important to select a generic domain name that identifies the product or services you provide to users on your website.

With a GENERIC domain name and a programmer who understands the importance of generic keys to search engine spiders, your website can be way above your competition on internet search engines.

Effective Linkbuilding Ideas

by on Apr.30, 2009, under SEO

Simple Linkbuilding Ideas

The world of SEO (search engine optimisation) is full of controversy. Some gurus say one thing and others something else. Not surprising since the algorithms used by the various search engines are shrouded in mystery.

One aspect of SEO that most reputable gurus would agree on is the importance of Backlinks. Backlinks are hyperlinks from one website to another. Interlinking is one of the key, fundamental strengths of HTML (hypertext markup language) enabling readers to simply click on a linked word, phrase or web address and visit the linked resource.

Links are fundamentally for the benefit of web users. But they are also useful to search engines. The words used as the link text (anchor text) can provide an indication of what is at the end of the link. The context in which the link appears can also provide an indication of the topic of the linked resource.

Without dwelling for too long on the pros and cons of various potential link sources and whether links from source ‘a’ are more powerful than links from source ‘b’ I thought I would share with you a few simple but effective, tried and tested link-development techniques.

My first suggestionis well known. Provide some ‘bait’ and other sites will link to yours without being asked. Linkbait (as it is called) can be anything from a simple image to a complex web application. Some popular and powerful linkbait examples include online quizzes, calculators, fact-sheets, tutorials and videos. Creating something that people find amusing is always a winner.

Another technique that I have used, with some success, is telling site owners about issues with their sites and suggesting fixes. Helping webmasters in this way establishes a relationship which can then be used to request a link. The typical issues that I have reported back to site owners include broken links, security issues, failure to meet web content accessibility guidelines, typos and spelling errors and standards compliance issues.

An old and well known technique that I have begun to use again recently, after having shelved it for some time, is simply emailing site owners asking for a link. To raise the chances of my being provided with a free link I have tried to target sites with related content and suggested to the site owner that their visitors might appreciate or benefit from such a link. I’ve also added content to my site specifically to back up my link request.

Another link-development related activity that always provides some useful potential link sources is profiling the sites and pages that are at the top of Google for certain target keyterms. For example, I recently carried out some Linkbuilding work for a car and van leasing company so I started by conducting a number of searches using various related terms including car and van leasing. lease cars, contract hire etc. Then I carried out a detailed backlink analysis of the pages that were returned at the top in Google. This highlighted a number of relevant, niche directories where I could easily submit links and a few other useful sources. This activity also provides a good picture of what I needed to beat in order to see my client site at the top of the Google SERPs.

I hope these simple ideas provide some food for thought and benefit to your own link building efforts.
