However, to get into the top 10 in Google for the phrase “web hosting” is extremely difficult, you would need to be a search engine pro to do it – even then, it might take you two years to get there with a team of 5 people working around the clock.

A profitable site will be based on a good keyword phrase, a good topic (or subject material) and be different enough to stand out from the competition. If you can combine these elements successfully you’ll increase you chances of turning a profit from your site.

A further consideration is that Google often changes its formula so you can’t rely on it being the same from month to month. Keywords phrases should be one of the most important considerations when you are optimizing your site (remember that for each page of the site you should concentrate on one or two keyword phrases).

Key factors for getting to the top of Google:
1. The keyword phrase in the title of the page – you should have the phrase in the title of the page.

You also want the phrase repeated a few times on the page. Don’t worry about how many times, just at least 3-4 times and more if you think it fits in naturally with the content of the page.

Links into your site from other sites
This is probably the most important factor for getting good search engine listings. You need to have good links coming into your site from other sites. You want those links to be from popular sites that also have lots of links coming into them. Google uses a Page Rank system which is a rough measure of how many links are coming into your site. You want links from sites that have good Page Rank. Creating 50 of your own sites and interlinking them won’t increase your page ranking.

How do you get links from other sites?
The main ways are to: Create a great site that people naturally want to link to, Get an affiliate program so people can link to your site and get paid, swap links with other sites, get listed in directories such as dmoz.org and buy links from people who have sites with a high PR (Page Rank). Again, we’ll be talking about this in more depth in another issue of the newsletter.

The most important consideration with incoming links is that you need to have the keyword phrase in the link that directs traffic to you your site. Getting listed in directories such as DMOZ (Open Directory Project) can also help you significantly in getting a good search engine ranking in Google.

Links within your site
It helps once again if you have the keyword phrase in the links to each page of your site. For example, let’s say you have a site on baby products and you have one page where you are trying to optimize for the keyword phrase “cheap baby supplies”. You should make sure that links that come into that page have the phrase “cheap baby supplies” so that your links look like this: Click here for cheap baby supplies

Links to other sites
You can improve your page rank if you link to other sites that have high search engine listings for the phrase that you are trying to optimize for. Note: it can also hinder if you link to pages that are off-topic. For example, you don’t want to link to a chemical arms factory from your baby supplies site.

Some other things you don’t want to do (and some things that make no difference at all) are:
1. Repeating the keyword phrase multiple times on the page unless it makes contextual sense.
2. Placing hidden links on your site – for example, links that are the same color as the background of the page won’t be recognized by Google.
3. Optimizing your site too carefully – if it’s obvious that you have optimized your site for Google (for example, if all your incoming links use the same keyword phrase) you may be penalized. Google looks for sites that are more ‘natural’ in their structure, so if all links look the same this won’t look like an organic site to Google robots and you may be penalized for it.
4. Despite popular opinion, Meta tags don’t really help at all. However, the description tag is important because that is the description that will appear in your listing on Google.

Finally, you may have heard of people using automated pages and or ‘cloaked pages’ to get high search engine rankings in Google. Personally, I don’t believe in taking this approach as it’s a non-sustainable way of getting high search engine rankings (that’s not say that some people who aren’t very successful at it). I know of atleast 3 highly successful companies who generate automated pages using this software http://www.profitpuppy.com/traffic. This is a sneaky way to make it to the top of of the search engine rankings, but it can work; one guy I know is earning several million dollars per year using this technique. So it can work, but as I mentioned before, I don’t think it’s sustainable and the Google engine doesn’t take kindly to it.

How do I submit my site to the search engines?
My personal philosophy is that if your site is not found naturally by following links then it is unlikely to rank in the search engines – I don’t usually bother submitting to search engines.
So that’s the basics of how to get to the top of the search engines. We’ll have a look at the more advanced stuff later on. It takes a lot of time knowledge and dedication to get there but once you master it, SEO is a fantastic way to get traffic and make money on the web. Over the next twenty four hours, those searches are indexed, tabulated, calculated and sorted, and the next day – 48 hours later – Y! publishes ‘the Buzz Index’ in a number of different forms. Want to know what was on people’s minds two days ago? You can get a quick snapshot by checking today’s Buzz Index page. There’s a Buzz Index for entertainment, movies, music, sports, movie stars and overall. But what’s it all mean? Here it is straight from the horse’s mouth:

A subject’s buzz score is the percentage of Yahoo! users searching for that subject on a given day, multiplied by a constant to make the number easier to read. Weekly leaders are the subjects with the greatest average buzz score for a given week.

So exactly what is the point of plopping that orange box in one of the prime pieces of SERP real estate? It doesn’t tell me anything relevant to my search (I searched for test scores, for nursing degrees and for consumer index). If I click on one of the ranked items, it feeds me the search results for that term. If I click on ‘More Buzz’ at the bottom, it takes me to the Buzz Index where I can read the latest blog entry.

To make it even more useless, the Buzz box only works in a few browsers. In the others, there’s either a blank column – or the Sponsor Results – which at least are contextually related to what I’m searching. Where’s the value added? About the only thing that it does is clutter up a space that could be used so much more profitably.

Now if Y! wanted to actually make this thing useful, here are a few suggestions.

First – make it contextually sensitive. If I type in a search for ‘tests,’ I’d find a list of related popular searches a WHOLE lot more useful than knowing that most of America is searching for info on the Pussycat Dolls two days ago.

Second, never mind the ranking – give me the numbers! How many people searched for Pussycat Dolls? Maybe it’s something I should know about, hmm?

Third – move it! I don’t refer to that place as ‘prime real estate’ for nothing. The upper right hand corner of your browser is one of the first places the eye lands on a page. It’s one of the reasons that you put important things in that space when you’re designing your pages. Why waste it?

For about 4 months I was manually doing this by hand and only got up to around 250 backlinks in MSN and Yahoo!. Hardly any backlinks were showing in Google, but everyone knows that Google doesn’t show the correct amount of backlinks. Even right now it shows link:www.cflwaves.com as having ONE backlink.

In June, I finally decided that I was over the process of manually finding the link partners. I started using the program Arelis and was amazed at the ease of use finding new link partners. I DID NOT like the fact that the program didn’t show me any of the pages PageRank though. I only used Arelis for about 3 days, getting around 25 backlinks.

I started searching around in the internet for an alternative and stumbled into SEO Elite by Brad Callen. I downloaded the demo and was amazed at the results I was getting. I had picked up about 50 backlinks in only 2 days of use. Then I saw Brad introduced the new Project 8: Find and Submit Using Link Submission Forms.

After watching Brad’s tutorial videos on this new project, I IMMEDIATELY went and purchased the product. After the first day I had already picked up 50 new backlinks using this new feature.

The keyphrase that I was targeting was ‘Central Florida Surf Report’. If you check MSN, I am ranked #1. If you check Yahoo! I am ranked #1. If you check Google I am still ranked #3 but I am pretty sure after the next Google update I will be #1. The cool thing about it is that since I was targetting ‘Central Florida Surf Report’, it eventually rolls over to ‘Florida Surf Report’. On MSN I am #1 for ‘Florida Surf Report’. On Yahoo! I am #1 for ‘Florida Surf Report’. On Google I am #15, but this should also go up the next Google update. Rolling over again, it eventually turns into ‘surf report’, currently on MSN I am ranked #13 for this keyphrase. It is very exciting to watch all my work actually pay off.

My traffic has tripled since January, and this month (August) I am expecting to receive from 11,000 – 12,000 unique visitors. Pretty good for a surf report website where all I do is update the surf report daily and forecast every few days right? This website is currently earning me over $600 a month in Adsense revenue, and that is increasing every month.

It is important to note that not all of your traffic comes from the search engines. When you are trading links with other websites, you also receive traffic from their websites, so the more backlinks you have, overall the more people you have!

Project 1: Analyze backlinks using a specified search engine

This project allows you to analyze your competitors search engine backlinks using any of the major search engines. The program will show you what anchor text people are linking to them with, the IP address of the website, the PageRank of the website, the Alexa Rank of the website, the Page Title that the link is on, how many outbound links the page has, and how many total links the page has. This project also shows you in an easy list how many PR0-10′s and their percentage that are linking to the site. It is kind of hard to explain so here is the format:

Project 2: Find and Email High Page Rank Link Partners

This is my favorite project of the whole program. It lets you find and email people that have atleast the minimum PageRank that you specify. You can find sites based on sites that link to your competitor, based on a search term, or from a links page – such as if your competitor has a long links page, and you want them all to link to you as well.

All you have to do is start the project, then load up one of your e-mail templates, select multiple e-mail addresses from the list and SEO Elite will send an e-mail to every single one of them. None of the receivers know that you have also sent that e-mail to another person. You can also customize your site templates to include the receiver’s name and website URL, so that the emails do not look machine generated.

Project 3: Analyze allinanchor, allintitle or allintext.

This project allows you to enter a keyword and analyze the top 10 ranking for allinanchor, allintitle, or allintext.

Allinanchor shows you the top number of websites with that particular keyword in their anchor text. If you are ranked #1 for allinanchor, you should soon be ranked #1 for that certain keyword.
