When utilizing used and old cell phones as a way or raising resources, one must keep the following things in mind in order to be successful. 1) When collecting cell phones look at the possible locations or resources from which you might draw these cell phones from. You may utilize your scout troop parents and friends. 2) After you have decided on the populace from which to draw (church, scout troop parents/friends, the neighborhood or the city) you need to put together a drop point or multiple drop points. People need to know where to drop off their cell phones, but they do not need to be told. Good drop points are gas stations, a church, grocery stores, universities, colleges, etc. Talk to the managers of these places and arrange an agreement to place well labeled boxes for collections and to make regular pick ups. Also, request that donations include their charging device. Place a short, well written “donation instructions” on the box. Include things like include chargers, batteries, working cell phones, no stolen phones, no broken phones, etc. You may still get some however as people will inevitably use it as a way of getting rid of broken phone, stolen phones and phones with balances because they know they cannot be reactivated.
There are two types of cell phones.
a. SIM card phones which are cell phones that require a little plastic card that is inserted inside the cell phone in order to make it operable. Such companies that use SIM technologies are the New ATT, T-Mobile, Nextel (not sprint), Cincinnati Bell, Sun Com, and Cellular One. These phones are often referred to as GSM phones. These phones are preferred because there is no interaction with the cell phone service provider to make them work. All one does is insert their SIM card and it works
b. Non SIM card phones are phones which do not require a SIM card to operate. They include such companies as Sprint, Verizon, Cricket, Pocket, Helio, US Cellular, Alltel, Virgin Mobile and Q- West. These phones are known as CDMA phones.
SIM card phones or GSM phones can be easily activated without the service provider being involved. These types of phones are more desirable for purchase. If the phone has been reported lost or stolen, it cannot be activated. This only applies to the non SIM card family of phones. This is why the SIM card phone or GSM phone is most desirable. Most online buyback companies will not pay for a cell phone that cannot be reactivated.

If your audience cannot be collected and addressed, then sort your collection between the two groups.

There are many advantages to purchasing a used cell phone. For many, the number one reason may be for financial reasons. Cell phones can be very expensive to obtain, so by purchasing a pre owned cell phone, you will save considerably over buying new. We’ve all been there: Cell phone companies having us at their mercy, just to obtain a replacement cell phone because our phone was lost, stolen, etc. Pre Owned cell phones are easily activated from the comfort of your own home, and takes just minutes. For instance: If you are with Cingular, ATT, or T-Mobile, simply remove your SIM card from underneath your battery (in most cases this is where you will find it), and reinsert it into your newly acquired pre owned cell phone, and you’re done! Lost your phone? No problem, simply go down to your local cell phone providers place of business and ask them for a new SIM card. For Verizon, Metro PCS, and the like, there is no SIM card. In this case you merely dial *611 on your newly acquired used cell phone, and a customer service rep from your cell phone provider will provision your phone with your existing account over the air.
Cell phones are made up of many toxic chemicals that include lead and mercury. Over time, these chemicals leak out, and into the ground, eventually entering our water system. The sad truth is that many, if not most of these discarded cell phones are far from being useless.
