Long Tail Keywords – Do They Convert

Time and time again those looking to get into Internet Marketing make the mistake of using very broad keywords to drive traffic to both their articles and landing pages. While this approach wont cost you money when you do so with Article Marketing, you will lose your precise time and see your articles outside the top 10 results in Google which can lead to a world of frustration. With Pay per click marketing, broad keywords can not only see you lose your time but your money.
One thing to remember is that more traffic does not mean more sales. Essentially, the only thing you will see going up are your costs. Now while that sounds counter productive it’s important to realize that highly relevant and targeted traffic will help place you in a better position to convert those leads into sales. Long tail keywords will get you less traffic but we are after traffic that will convert not traffic that will ultimately lead to people pressing the back button in their browser.
The most important factor in determining whether you will improve your conversion is which phase of the buy cycle you target. Using broad keywords such as those that are one or two words long using fell into the research category , these visitors could simply be researching a solution to their problems or finding a product to suit their needs. It is more difficult to turn a researcher into a buyer when they do not know what they are looking for and their options. Those who know what they want and simply need to be aligned with a product or service will be more inclined to pull out their credit card and purchase what you are promoting. These are the visitors you should be targeting, those are in the final stages of committing to a purchase, generally very short, broad keywords make it difficult to target these people, can be costly and can be extremely difficult to get you front page results in Google your articles.
Long tail keywords can greatly increase the chances to not only get your articles listed in the top spot in search results but can get new sites indexed quickly. If you are finding it difficult to get to the front page of Google or are having difficulty with your Adwords campaigns, it may be time to start looking into how you can convert your existing broad keywords into long tail razor sharp highly targeted traffic.
