Make Money Online By Being Motivated

by on Apr.16, 2009, under Online Marketing

If there is one single, key factor in online marketing success it has got to be motivation. Your success with any online venture will largely depend upon your being motivated.

Some years back, when I first discovered online marketing, I was extremely excited by the possibilities. I couldn’t stop talking to people about it. My girlfriend, family and close friends soon became bored by my incessant rants about how internet marketing was the future and how we were all going to make loads of money out of it. I decided that internet marketing was the business for me and began to spend my evenings reading all I could about marketing via the internet.

I stuck at it obsessively for about a month. Every evening I was hunched over my computer, making notes, joining forums and building contacts. My girlfriend almost left me; I lost focus on my day job and one of my cats moved in with the neighbours. Then, all of a sudden, I stopped.

No matter what I did, I just couldn’t muster any enthusiasm to continue with my online marketing interest. I had completely lost my motivation. My girlfriend, although pleased that I was now spending more time with her, was concerned by the sudden change in my apparent enthusiasm. She decided that we needed a holiday.

We hopped on a plane to Ibiza and flew from Gatwick for two weeks of sun and relaxation in the Mediterranean Sea. It was while we were on holiday, chatting, walking in the sun and enjoying the relaxation, that I formulated an approach that has helped me regain my motivation and remain motivated while balancing my new, self-employed status with a healthy social and family life.

I began by clarifying, for myself, what my goals were. That wasn’t actually too hard, but I’d never really stopped and thought about it before. I used a little creative visualisation to picture what it would be like to reach each of my goals. I was already feeling more motivated.

I had taken along my little notepad computer so I had already begun to make notes of my goals and how I might achieve some of them. In my head I’d begun to formulate a business plan that would see me establish an online marketing business and leave my mundane office job.

I sketched out a time line and plotted the dates when I intended to achieve each of my goals. One of the first was to put together a detailed business plan and so I set to it right away and began to plan my business while we were on holiday.

I broke everything down into manageable tasks, with little rewards for completing key tasks. When we came home I established a timetable, during the working week, in which I would work on my project only up until 9p.m. in the evenings. Then I would turn my computer off and spend a couple of hours relaxing with my partner before retiring.

I stuck to my timetable, remained focussed, created my business plan and within 3 months after coming back from our holiday I’d handed in my notice at my boring office job. By this time I was confident that I would get enough work as a freelance internet marketing consultant. That was over a year ago.

I’ve since taken on an office assistant and have successfully helped around 27 companies achieve online success through effective internet marketing. And it all comes down to motivation. Without it I’d be standing still.
